Portland Ballet opens its season with Giselle, a story of love and betrayal, life and death, vengeance and forgiveness. Follow the story, as passionately told by the dancers of Portland Ballet, of the peasant girl, Giselle, as she falls in love with the nobleman, Albrecht, whose betrayal condemns her to the unearthly realm of the Wilis. This beloved romantic ballet, set to music by Adolphe Adam, has withstood the test of time as one of ballet’s predominant works to showcase the power of storytelling through ballet.

Portland Ballet’s A Victorian Nutcracker returns to the stage this holiday season with newly designed backdrops and set pieces inspired by Portland’s Victoria Mansion. A Victorian Nutcracker is a retelling of the classic story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream, brought on by the curious gift of a nutcracker, in which she travels to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Land of the Sweets. This version, with characters pulled directly from Portland’s past, is sure to please audience members of all ages.

Community Appreciation Performance

Portland Ballet’s Community Appreciation Concert will spotlight the voices of our dancers as they step into the role of choreographer. This evening will feature selections choreographed by the artists you have admired as dancers, as they move to the front of the studio to share what they have to say as creators of movement. Portland Ballet’s Community Appreciation Performance of New Works allows members of our community to enjoy a Portland Ballet performance at Westbrook Performing Arts Center at a reduced rate.

Portland Ballet’s season closes with Nell Shipman’s Sylvia. Based on Greek mythology, Sylvia tells the story of how the mild shepherd Aminta wins the heart of the huntress nymph Sylvia with the divine help of Eros and Diana. This premiere of a dynamic new work by Artistic Director Nell Shipman set to the rousing music of Delibes, will inspire and delight audiences of all ages.
